<p>With increasing interaction and travelling opportunities, different airlines are diversifying their flights to newer destinations. One such airline is the British Airways which has recently ordered to dispatch <a href="http://www.searchcheapflights.co.uk/flights/cancun/">flights to Cancun, Mexico</a> from the UK travel hub.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.searchcheapflights.co.uk/airlines/british_airways.htm"><img title="Logo British Airways Cheap Flights Worldwide" src="http://news.searchcheapflights.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/British_Airways_Logo.jpg" border="0" alt="Logo British Airways Cheap Flights Worldwide" width="300" height="89" align="right" /></a></p>
<p>It is further planning to operate its flights to Mauritius, which are currently being departed from the Heathrow Airport, via Gatwick Airport in future, starting from November. Adding to the flight facilities, new developments have also taken place regarding the food place around the edifice. A number of new dining facilities which were opened last month can now be used for selecting and enjoying varied cuisines</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p> </p>
<address>By <a title="See all posts by MONICA DRAKE" href="https://mail.google.com/author/monica-drake/">MONICA DRAKE</a></address>
<p><!-- The Content -->Undeterred by travel warnings and frightening headlines about safety in Mexico, an increasing number of international tourists are flying to the country, according to the <a href="http://www.visitmexico.com/wb/Visitmexico/Visi_Home?show=regions">Mexico Tourism Board</a>. The number of international tourists who flew to Mexico from January to August increased 19 percent over the same period last year, according to the board, and most were from the United States. More than four million American citizens flew to Mexico, an increase of 15 percent over the same period last year, and about 61 percent of international tourists to Mexico are Americans.</p>
<p>“There are several reasons why Mexico’s tourism numbers are up, but the strongest reason is the value Mexico delivers,” said Alfonso Sumano, director of the Americas for the tourism board. “In addition to having several of the top sun and beach destinations of the world, Mexico has 30,000 archeological sites, 110,000 monuments and  31 Unesco World Heritage sites.  Many places have one or maybe two of these elements, but only Mexico combines all of them in one destination.”</p>
<p>The surge in tourism is being matched by a surge in flights from North American hubs: Continental, United Airlines and Delta have all announced plans for additional flights to Mexican destinations, including Mexico City and Cancún</p>

<h2>Exploring Mexico&#8217;s Yucatan State</h2>

<div id="story">
<p>The Yucatan State may see fewer tourists than its Mayan Riviera neighbors to the south, but that doesn&#8217;t mean it&#8217;s lacking in things to do. In fact, if you&#8217;re looking for something extra to spice up your beach vacation, the Yucatan State is the perfect destination. Once home to the ancient Mayans, it offers everything from rustic colonial villages to bustling, modern cities, and of course, Mayan ruins. History and culture influence everything, from satiating <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.mayaland.com/Food/sopadelima.htm" target="_blank">sopa de lima</a> served at popular restaurants to crumbling temples. If you want to experience the &#8220;real Mexico,&#8221; here are a few activities that are not to be missed.</p>
<h2>Beaches</h2>
<p>For most foreign tourists, Mexico is synonymous with beaches, and it&#8217;s no wonder: they&#8217;re stunning. However, don&#8217;t come to the Yucatan State expecting azure Caribbean waters and sugar colored sand. Save that for Cancun, Playa del Carmen, or Tulum. The beaches here border the Gulf of Mexico, not the Caribbean, and the water is more emerald green than blue, while the coastline boasts larger surf. Still, they&#8217;re perfect for working on your tan while sipping margaritas.</p>

<p>Be sure to check out the beaches at <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.yucatantoday.com/destinations/eng-progreso.htm" target="_blank">Progreso</a> or <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.yucatantoday.com/destinations/eng-celestun.htm" target="_blank">Celestun</a>. Progreso, with a population of about 45,000, is popular with Mexican tourists as well as cruise travelers from the United States. Celestun, on the other hand, is much smaller and less developed. It&#8217;s the place to go if you want to experience what the entire Mexican coast was like before tourism took hold in the 1970s. It&#8217;s rustic and charming, and you might just be the only <em>gringo</em> on the beach.</p>
<h2>Flora, Fauna &amp; Flamingos</h2>
<p>A few miles from Celestun center you&#8217;ll find <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.mexonline.com/celestun.htm" target="_blank">Ria Celestun Biosphere Reserve</a>, a huge estuary home to thousands of brilliant pink flamingos, exotic plants, and other birds. If you visit during the winter months, you might be lucky enough to see up to 30,000 flamingos, along with other bird species. Viewings in the late spring, summer, and early fall are more modest, although still impressive. While admission to the estuary costs only 40(about $4; see <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.xe.com/ucc" target="_blank&quot;">XE.com</a> for current exchange rates) pesos per person, you&#8217;ll also need to hire a boat with a driver, which costs 500 pesos per hour. Without a boat, you won&#8217;t be able to see the flamingo nesting grounds or ride through the estuary&#8217;s mangrove swamp. In addition, if you speak Spanish—or are lucky to snag an English speaking guide—you&#8217;ll be treated to a guided tour of the entire area.</p>
<h2>Colonial Cities</h2>
<p>Originally the Mayan city of T&#8217;ho, <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.yucatantoday.com/destinations/eng-merida.htm" target="_blank">Merida</a> was founded in 1542 by a Spaniard, Francisco de Montejo, and is now the state&#8217;s capital and cultural center. Although forcibly taken from the Mayans, the modern city retains some of its ancient ties. Toppled Mayan temples make up the foundations of some of the city&#8217;s oldest buildings, including the Cathedral of San Idelfonso, the oldest cathedral on the continent. The Government House boasts gorgeous open-air <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.yucatantoday.com/culture/eng-castro-pacheco-murals.htm" target="_blank">murals</a> by Fernando Castro Pacheco depicting the long history of the region.</p>
<p>With a low crime rate and many cultural attractions, Merida is quickly growing as a tourist destination. Certain nights of the week are always busy with events. Visitors might want to spend Thursday night at the Santa Lucia&#8217;s serenade in Santa Lucia Park. Saturday night is ideal for dining, dancing, and drinking <em>micheladas</em> (dark local beer mixed with lime juice, Worcestershire sauce, and hot sauce) on the streets surrounding the main square. And the Sunday market is the place to go for local wares such as handmade hammocks, pottery, and jewelry.</p>
<p>Other colonial cities in the area are <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.yucatantoday.com/destinations/eng-valladolid.htm" target="_blank">Valladolid</a>, home to the beautiful colonial Church of San Gervasio, and <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.yucatantoday.com/destinations/eng-izamal.htm" target="_blank">Izamal</a>, which is famous for its vibrant yellow buildings and the convent that houses the miraculous <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.clas.ufl.edu/users/afburns/merida2000/relig/mary.html" target="_blank">Virgin of Izamal</a> icon.</p>
<h2>Mayan Temples</h2>
<p>The Yucatan State is most famous for its Mayan ruins. It is estimated that between 2,600 and 2,700 archeological sites exist in the state alone; some 4,000 dot the entire peninsula. Seventeen sites have been restored and are open to the public, the most famous being Chichen Itza, Ek Balam, and Uxmal.</p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.yucatantoday.com/destinations/eng-chichen-itza.htm" target="_blank">Chichen Itza</a> is undoubtedly the most visited Mayan site in the state. Get there early to avoid to the tourist crowds. <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.yucatantoday.com/destinations/eng-uxmal.htm" target="_blank">Uxmal</a> and <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.yucatantoday.com/destinations/eng-ekbalam.htm" target="_blank">Ek Balam</a> are less busy and allow for more time alone with the stone temples. Although more out of the way, Ek Balam is especially worth a visit. Restoration began in 1997, and archeologists are still uncovering buildings on the site. Tall stone mounds lay covered in grass and moss, reminding visitors that almost two thousand years have passed since the temples were used.</p>
<p>Expect to pay a small entrance fees at each site, and be prepared to spend about 215 pesos an hour for the services of a good local guide. As very few of the ruins are marked, a guide is necessary to explain the history and importance of each site.<br />
<!-- begin ad tag (tile 3) --><!-- /* <![CDATA[ */ document.write('<scr' + 'ipt language="JavaScript" src="http://ad.doubleclick.net/adj/ta.st.com/news_and_advice;awr=northamerica;act=merida;act=chichenitza;act=valladolid;ast=yucatan;aco=mexico;sz=120x600,160x600,300x600,300x250,250x250;tile=3;ord=225916233;" type="text/javascript"><\/scr' + 'ipt>&#8216;); /*  */ // &#8211;>Cenotes</p>
<p>Cenotes are underground fresh water pools originally used by the ancients either to cool off in the hot summer months or for the ritual sacrifice (no one is quite sure). Today, tourists can take advantage of the region&#8217;s 2,600 cenotes without fear of being sacrificed to the gods. Many small, rural hotels and haciendas have access to them on their properties. In addition, the recently opened living history museum, <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.sotutadepeon.com/english/index.htm" target="_blank">Sotuta de Peon</a>, offers day tours of its property for those interested in learning about hacienda history. The tour concludes with a dip in the museum&#8217;s private cenote. Briskly refreshing, it&#8217;s worth the 450 peso tour (which also includes round-trip transfers to/from your Merida hotel, call +52 999-941-8639). You can also try the famous <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.xaac.com/playacar/dzitnup.htm" target="_blank">Cenote Dzitnup</a> in Valladolid for a small admission fee of about 10 pesos.</p>
<p>With so many things to do, a trip to the Yucatan State is sure to keep you busy and stimulated. Bursting with historical and cultural sites, the area is beckoning to be discovered, but remains pleasantly off the beaten path for the time being. Plus, you can always work in a day at the beach after you climb the temples, swim in the cenotes, or dance the night away in Merida. You might need it.</p>

<description><![CDATA[ USA Today "Mexico Violence not as widespread as it seems" Oct 2010]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div>Mexico City. Gruesome murders appear to be commonplace in Mexico. The severed heads of eight men found in pairs along highways in Durango. Seventeen people massacred at a birthday party in Torreon. The bodies of 55 people found dumped in a mine near the town of Taxco.</div>
<p>Mexicans and their American neighbors are being bombarded by news of shootouts, bombings, kidnappings and executions as drug smugglers battle each other and the government for control of the narcotics trade.</p>
<p>But a closer look at the latest official statistics indicates that much of Mexico has modest murder rates. The horrific violence that is jacking up the national death toll is largely in nine of Mexico&#8217;s 31 states.</p>
<p>Despite a wave of killings in these states, the murder rate in 2009 was still lower than it was a decade before, long before the Mexican government began a crackdown against the cartels.</p>
<p>&#8220;If you look at history, today we have fewer murders, both in raw numbers and rates,&#8221; said Mario Arroyo, a researcher with the Citizens&#8217; Institute for Crime Studies, a Mexico City think tank.</p>
<p>The statistics show that the most deadly violence is happening in northern Mexico close to the U.S. border where smuggling occurs, and in the states where marijuana and heroin are produced. Also:</p>
<p>•The state with the lowest murder rate is Yucatán, the Gulf of Mexico state known for its beaches and Mayan ruins. Its murder rate of 2 per 100,000 was comparable to Wyoming and Montana.</p>
<p>•Washington, D.C.&#8217;s murder rate is nearly quadruple that of the Mexican capital, Mexico City. Washington&#8217;s murder rate was 31.4 per 100,000 people in 2008; Mexico City&#8217;s rate in 2009 was 8.</p>
<p><strong>Footnotes to the numbers</strong></p>
<p>Experts caution that murder statistics give only a narrow view of crime. <strong> </strong>Mexico&#8217;s 2009 murder rate was still more than twice as high as the U.S. rate.</p>
<p>The statistics also do not take into account extortion, robbery or other offenses. Some anti-crime groups say Mexico City is No. 1 in the world in kidnappings for ransoms or cash that a victim is forced to withdraw from ATMs.</p>
<p>The Mexican government has not released a breakdown by city, only states, so it is difficult to know where in a sprawling state that the violence is occurring. Mexico&#8217;s Public Safety Secretariat released the 2009 murder totals in July in response to a request by the Citizens&#8217; Institute for Crime Studies.</p>
<p>The statistics are the most recent released by the government. Some Mexican news media keep their own daily tallies, but they track only drug-related murders.</p>
<p>The numbers do not reflect the increasingly macabre nature of Mexico&#8217;s drug killings as the cartels try to intimidate Mexicans. Bodies are routinely dismembered or hanged from bridges. Mass shootings have become common as hit-men hunt down rivals at parties or drug rehabilitation centers.</p>
<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s a disconnect between the statistics and the perception of the public,&#8221; said Elias Kuri, president of Light Up Mexico, an anti-crime association.</p>
<p>Nevertheless, the numbers do give some credence to President Felipe Calderón, who insists that the worst violence is confined to certain regions and is mostly among gang members. He has accused the news media of exaggerating the violence.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve got problematic cities, yes,&#8221; Calderón said in a speech on crime. &#8220;But we also have areas and states, especially tourist areas, that have murder rates equal to many countries in Europe.&#8221;</p>
<p>In past decades, most murders in Mexico were over personal disputes, Arroyo said. Hundreds of people also died in conflicts between ethnic groups, Catholic and Protestant villages, and rival <em>ejidos,</em> or communal farms.</p>
<p>But murders had been dropping steadily, from 16,163 in 1997 to 10,291 in 2007, even as Mexico&#8217;s population grew. The murder rate sank from 17 to 10 per 100,000 people.</p>
<p>Part of the decline was tied to Mexico&#8217;s stable economy, helped along by the 1994 <a href="http://content.usatoday.com/topics/topic/North+American+Free+Trade+Agreement">North American Free Trade Agreement</a>, Arroyo said. A 1992 constitutional amendment that changed laws on communal land also helped, said Edna Jaime of Mexico Evaluates, another think tank in Mexico City. The laws eased ethnic frictions by settling disputes and giving out deeds to individual farmers.</p>
<p>&#8220;It was a very steady and pronounced decline,&#8221; Jaime said. &#8220;It was part of becoming a more modern and civilized country.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Recent violence tied to crackdown</strong></p>
<p>A rise in murder rates coincided with Calderón&#8217;s crackdown, which has splintered the old drug cartels and led to a spate of infighting, according to the government.</p>
<p>Calderón said the offensive was needed because the cartels had infiltrated local governments and were threatening to become more powerful than police.</p>
<p>From 2007 to 2009, the murder rate jumped from 10 to 14 per 100,000 people. That&#8217;s still low compared with countries such as Brazil, with a murder rate of 22, or Honduras, with 60.9.</p>
<p>&#8220;If you look at Mexico as a whole country, it&#8217;s really not as bad as other places,&#8221; said Jose Miguel Cruz, an expert on Latin American crime at <a href="http://content.usatoday.com/topics/topic/Organizations/Schools/Vanderbilt+University">Vanderbilt University</a>.</p>
<p>The real question is whether Mexico can stop the recent upswing in violence, experts say.</p>
<p>In recent months, Mexican authorities have killed several drug lords, including Arturo Beltrán Leyva and Ignacio &#8220;Nacho&#8221; Coronel, and captured dozens of lower-level smugglers.</p>
<p>But the gangs have also gotten better at killing, carrying out sophisticated ambushes on police and experimenting with techniques such as car bombs.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re seeing brutal violence, and in some states it&#8217;s almost more than society can bear,&#8221; Jaime said. &#8220;Numbers are one thing &#8230; but what we don&#8217;t know is where this is all headed.&#8221;</p>
